Lawrence Mangubat drained crucial baskets in the last 25 seconds as Mapua squeaked past Lyceum, 69-68, to clinch a Final Four spot in NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

The rookie sensation first rifled a jumper that tied the count at 66-all before retaliating with a booming triple in the last 4.5 ticks that sealed the victory for the Cardinals, who hiked their win-loss tally to 11-3.
The win not only kept Mapua unscathed in the second round, but also stretched its winning streak to four games to tighten its hold on the second spot, just half a game behind league-leading College of St. Benilde (11-2), which it towed to the next phase.
Mangubat saw action in 29 minutes and managed with only a single turnover, pacing the Cardinals with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists.
“Nakita namin yung mga veterans namin medyo off ngayon kaya kailangan kaming mga sidekick mag-step-up,” said Mangubat.
Mapua clung to 14-point lead at the end of the third period, 54-40, until Lyceum uncorked a blistering 15-1 run that locked the game at 55-all.
The Pirates persisted particularly in the final minute where Renz Villegas sank three charities off a crucial foul from Marc Cuenco to give Lyceum a 66-64 lead.
But Mangubat was there to save the day.
Chris Hubilla also stepped up for the Cardinals with 14 points, while Cuenco and Escamis chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Villegas, meanwhile, pumped in 22 points in a losing cause for Lyceum, which absorbed its third straight defeat to slip at 6-8 in tie with University of Perpetual Help at sixth to seventh places.
In the other game, San Beda used a big second quarter run to break loose and hammer out an 83-70 rout of Jose Rizal University that strengthened its Final Four bid.
James Payosing and Jomel Puno presided over the carnage with 18 and 17 points, respectively, as the Lions improved to 9-5 and inched closer to making the semis cut.
The Bombers stumbled to 4-10.
