Customs foils smuggling attempt, seizes fuel

The Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) stated that its Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) quickly set up checkpoints that resulted in intercepting five lorries transporting unmarked smuggled fuel.

As per the BOC report, the initial testing was stopped due to the arrival of armed civilians who claimed to be Philippine National Police (PNP) intelligence agents.

Intelligence from the 10th Infantry Division revealed that unmarked fuel was suspected to be smuggled in Tarragona, Davao Oriental, where several tanker trucks were seen.

Also, reports cited by the BOC claimed that the Aquaman 3 vessel moved offshore after transferring fuel into lorry trucks bound for Mati, Davao Oriental.

The enforcement team then moved to Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, with military escort.

Initial and confirmatory tests on samples from the five lorries containing around 238,000 liters of unmarked diesel showed a zero percent Relative Marker Level.

This eventually led to the seizure and detention of the lorries and unmarked fuel.

“The BOC remains resolute in its commitment in working alongside partner law enforcement agencies to curtail the illegal trade of petroleum products and strengthen maritime security measures,” Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio said in a statement.

Rubio stressed that the Bureau’s enforcement and coordination efforts reflect its commitment to maritime safety and the protection of reputable businesses in the country.
