Over 1,600 families affected by 'Kristine' in Manila

The local government of Manila said that around 1,646 families were recorded as displaced by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine in the city as of October 24 and 25.

On Saturday, October 26, Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan said some families are still staying at evacuation centers in their respective barangays, while others have returned to their homes as the weather has improved.

Lacuna-Pangan said the evacuees can stay for as long as they want.

"How long they stay is up to them. We will continue to give them food and medicines while they are in our care," she assured.

The mayor visited evacuees in different barangays to ensure that their needs, such as hot meals and food boxes, had been met.

She noted that the evacuation centers in Baseco and Delpan currently have the highest number of evacuees.

"As of yesterday noon, only the evacuation centers in Baseco and Delpan can be considered to have many evacuees. The rest are down to a few,” she said.

“The numbers are expected to dwindle this weekend as the situation returns to normal in the barangays," Lacuna-Pangan added.

To ensure the safety of Manileños, the local government deployed medical teams to all evacuation centers to check on evacuees. They also provided prophylaxis to residents who have waded through floodwaters to prevent leptospirosis.

The city's Department of Public Services (DPS) is also conducting cleaning operations at evacuation sites to maintain cleanliness.

The city government added that around 244 metric tons of debris and garbage have been hauled away by the city's waste management crews.
