DOLE promotes AI adoption to boost productivity in small businesses

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) hosted the 2024 National Productivity Conference to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform productivity for the nation’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

DOLE Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma said the conference, which was held in partnership with the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC), underscored AI’s potential to significantly boost productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness among MSMEs in today’s technology-driven global market.

The event gathered AI and digital technology experts, regional wage board members, MSME leaders, and representatives from both the public and private sectors.

Dr. Sebastian C. Ibanez of the Center for AI Research presented the National AI Strategy Roadmap 2.0, outlining a structured approach for MSMEs to adopt AI and improve their operational efficiency.

In addition, Dr. Eugene Rex Jalao from UP Diliman discussed essential AI infrastructure needed to close digital gaps for small businesses.

Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, Ms. Mary Rose Ofianga of the Wadhwani Foundation shared strategies to address the gender digital divide, focusing on workforce training to ensure women in MSMEs gain equal access to digital resources.

Industry experts, including Atty. Yves Gonzales of Google Philippines and Mr. Jude Michael Teves of the Asian Development Bank provided practical insights on leveraging AI to streamline MSME operations. Mr. Gian Paulo Dela Rama of Sprout Solutions also highlighted the supportive role of AI in human resource management.

Laguesma reiterated the necessity of skilled human resources to drive effective AI adoption, stating, “Human resources are the drivers of technology, not the other way around.”

To further assist MSMEs in navigating AI advancements, DOLE promoted its Adjustment Measures Program (AMP), which offers support in skills training, management practices, and technology integration, ensuring that these enterprises remain adaptable and competitive in a rapidly changing environment.
