Disaster prepared re-evaluation needed after 'Kristine', says Castro

The government needs to re-evaluate the priorities of national disaster preparedness following the devastation that typhoon "Kristine" caused to the country, House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro said.

Castro said the typhoon, which has already claimed over 20 lives in the Bicol region and affected millions across 12 regions, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive action on disaster risk reduction and environmental protection.

"We are once again reminded of the vulnerability of our nation to natural calamities," stated the Makabayan lawmaker.

"While we must remain vigilant and prepared for the immediate dangers posed by typhoon Kristine, it is equally crucial to address the systemic issues that exacerbate these disasters," the aspiring senator noted.

Castro highlighted the role of large corporations in contributing to environmental degradation, calling for accountability and sustainable practices.

"No amount of flood control projects can protect us if corporate interests continue to exploit our natural resources without regard for environmental consequences," she said.

The ACT Teachers Party-list further called on the government to prioritize disaster risk reduction programs over confidential and intelligence funds.

"Investments should be directed towards strengthening the resilience of our communities, ensuring that they are equipped to handle the challenges posed by natural disasters. The cycle of destruction and insufficient aid must cease.

"The government has a responsibility to protect and prioritize the welfare of its citizens over corporate profits," Castro added.

She also appealed for swift action to support affected communities while advocating for long-term policies that safeguard the environment and prevent future calamities.

"We stand with the Filipino people in demanding accountability and action. No Filipino should suffer from hunger and fear with every approaching storm," she concluded.
