La Mesa Dam approaches spilling level amid heavy rains

The water level at La Mesa Dam in Quezon City reached 79.71 meters at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, just 0.44 meters shy of its spilling level of 80.15 meters.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the water level is “expected to rise due to moderate to occasional heavy rains caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.”

Since La Mesa Dam has no gate to control floodwater accumulation, PAGASA warned that once the dam reaches 80.15 meters, excess water will spill over.

Discharges from the dam may affect low-lying areas along the Tullahan River in Quezon City (Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome), Valenzuela (North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision), and Malabon.

PAGASA advised residents in these areas, particularly those near riverbanks, are urged to remain vigilant for rising water levels along the Tullahan River.
