'Doblado na': Mayor Honey signs ordinance to double seniors citizens' payout

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan formally signed the ordinance that will double the senior citizens' payout from P500 to P1,000 starting January 2025.
The signing ceremony was held on Thursday, October 24, at the Mayor’s Office inside Manila City Hall with Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) Officer-In-Charge Elinor A. Jacinto, Secretary to the Mayor Marlon Lacson and the principal authors of the ordinance led by Councilors Philip Lacuna, Fa Fugoso, Uno Lim, Nino dela Cruz, Atty. Jong Isip, Rod Lacsamana, Maile Atienza, Macky Lacson, Lei Lacuna, Charry Ortega and Marjun Isidro.
Under the Ordinance No. 9081, the payout distribution will be conducted every three months starting March 2025.
Around 203,000 seniors citizens are registered in Manila and will receive the allowance.
The city government said Lacuna-Pangan is the first mayor in the country to match the Department of Social Welfare and Development's monthly allowance for senior citizens worth P1,000.
It added that the increase is the result of the responsible fiscal management of the current administration.
"Ginawa rin po nating sistematiko at mas maayos ang proseso sa distribution ng senior's allowance. Malaki na ang improvement mula noong tayo ay naging punong lungsod. Ngayon, madalas na po ang updating at masinop ang requirements para masigurong totoong beneficiary ang makakatanggap ng allowance (We also made the senior's allowance distribution process more systematic and orderly. There has been a lot of improvement since we became the city mayor. Today, the requirements are frequently updated and prudent to ensure that the true beneficiary will receive the allowance)," she said.
“Upang matiyak na hindi nasasayang ang pondo ng bayan, regular naming nililinis ang listahan upang alisin ang mga pumanaw na, lumipat na sa probinsya o ibang bansa, o may pekeng dokumento (To ensure that public funds are not wasted, we regularly update the list to remove those who have passed away, moved to the province or another country, or have fake documents),” the mayor assured Manileños.
The mayor added her that the administration improved and strengthened its social amelioration programs to make sure all public funds are spent properly and wisely, and loopholes are plugged to prevent graft and fraud.
