DepEd:322 classrooms totally damaged due to 'Kristine'; infra damage reaches P1B
The estimated cost of damage to school infrastructure has reached P1 billion, with over 800 classrooms affected by the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Kristine.

Latest data from the Department of Education (DepEd), released on Thursday, Oct. 24, showed that 322 classrooms were completely damaged, while 504 classrooms were partially damaged.
DepEd data also indicated that 144 schools reported secondary hazards or incidents, particularly flooding and landslides.
A total of 352 schools are also being used as evacuation centers, according to DepEd.
The department’s rapid assessment revealed that the impact of “Kristine” has resulted in P1.06 billion in infrastructure damage so far.
Based on initial estimates, DepEd needs P805 million for the reconstruction of the completely damaged classrooms, while P252 million is needed for the major repairs of the partially damaged classrooms.
Suspension of classes
To ensure the safety of students and teachers, face-to-face classes have been suspended in 37,375 schools across 183 divisions in 15 regions.
The suspension of in-person classes is affecting 1,900,262 learners while 773,739 teaching and non-teaching personnel are also affected.
DepEd that it will continue to monitor the effects of hazards in the affected regions and divisions.
