Pinoy math aces conquer Singapore competition with 45 medals

A total of 45 medals - 7 gold, 12 silver, and 22 bronze medals, plus one merit medal in the individual category and another silver and two bronze  in the team category - were won by Filipino mathematics aces during their stint in the International Math Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA) in Singapore held on October 19 to 20, the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philippines (MTG) said.

Competing against over 80 students from 12 countries - Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Bulgaria, India, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, the contingent emerged triumphant securing an impressive 7 gold, 12 silver, and 22 bronze medals, along with a merit award. 

"The Philippines narrowly missed out on the top spot, securing the 1st runner-up position, just a few points behind the champion Hong Kong team. Adding to their success, two Filipino teams also secured second runner-up positions, showcasing the depth of talent within the Philippine delegation," the MTG said.

Dr. Simon Chua, MTG head, named the country's gold medalists as Jaycel Altair Juan of Philippine Yu Chiau School; Nathan Keith Nierras of University of Sto. Tomas; Vincent Benito Chan and Byron Alden Tam of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Anika Gayle Tan of DLSU Integrated School; Reilyn Abbygayle So of St. Jude Catholic School and Chelsea Kristanna Tan of Davao Christian School.

The silver medal winners are Michael Vincent Bernabe of San Beda College Alabang; King Mathew Pandas of Ligao National High School; Bryce Aldridge Tam, Layna Bree Hung and Jerome Rance Ejedio of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Arkesha Gavrielle Cantalejo of Falcon School; Sofia Lim of Chiang Kai Shek College; Vlade Montgomery Guillermo of St. Peter the Apostle School; Lanz Arthur Gaurana of Trinity Christian School; Sofia Victoria Domingo of Xavier School Nuvali; Grantley Nigel Hao of St. Jude Catholic School and Khent Lewis Su of Philippine Institute of Quezon City.

The bronze medals came courtesy of Dior Carolyn Yutankin of International Christian School; Alexa Amara Dimapilis and Charity Tordillas of First Asia Institute of Tech. & Humanities; Jaelyn Danielle Chua and Nia Grantyn Hao of St. Jude Catholic School; Avery Shana Lim, Lance Gabriel Madrazo, Gabriel Royce Lim, Joaquin Wilco Hung, Jianna Brielle Go and Jace Mateus Que of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Benedict Frondozo of Ligao National High School; David Aldrin Diamitas of Elizabeth Seton School Las Pinas; Don Maverick Wu of Philippine Cultural College; Aston Caleb Lim of Xavier School San Juan; Janelle Trinidad of Colegio San Agustin Binan; Gabe Breinel Castillo of Kong Hua School; Zaidylle Nino Maghanoy of Mary Help of Christians School; Carmella Tan of Phil. Institute of Quezon City; Richard Dong and Don Ericsson Wu of Phil. Cultural College Manila and Sena Dong of Ateneo de Davao University Grade School.

The merit awardees are Roanne Louise Gante of San Beda College Alabang and Jiro Nicholas Que of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

Math specialist Manuel Kotah is the Philippine team leader

The delegation's success underscores the country's growing reputation as a powerhouse in mathematics education. 

The young mathematicians, ranging from elementary to high school, demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. 

"This resounding success speaks to the dedication and talent of these young Filipinos, their mentors, and their supportive families and schools that foster their love for mathematics. The Philippines is proud to celebrate their achievement and looks forward to seeing their continued success in the future," the MTG noted.
