Metro cities suspend classes due to TS ‘Kristine’


Several cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) suspended classes in almost all levels, both in private and public schools, after the NCR was placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 due to Tropical Storm “Kristine.”

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan announced the suspension of classes in the city based on Department of Education Order No. 37, Series of 2022.

The order includes public and private schools, online classes, and the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the local government.

"Manatili na lang po sa inyong mga tahanan at inaabisuhan ang lahat na maghanda at mag ingat (We advise you to stay inside your homes and be prepared), " the mayor said.

In Metro Manila, 1,403 barangays were reported vulnerable to landslide and flood hazards due to Kristine, including areas in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Pasay, Pateros, Las Piñas, Makati, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Taguig, Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Pasig, San Juan and Manila.

The Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela (Camanava), and Quezon City local governments also declared the suspension of classes in public and private schools for students in Kindergarten to Senior High and Alternative Learning System (ALS) in their cities. 

In Malabon and Valenzuela cities, classes in all levels, both public and private schools, were also suspended. 

However, the Valenzuela city government said that online classes for college level will continue as scheduled. 

The Pateros municipal government announced the suspension of face-to-face classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 on Oct. 22.

The Taguig City government said tropical storm signal No. 1 automatically suspends face-to-face classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in all public and private schools. 

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon also suspended classes in all levels in the city and said the suspension also covers classes under the Alternative Learning System and Early Childhood Education Division. 

The local governments of Marikina, Pasig, and Mandaluyong also announced the suspension of classes in private and public schools in their cities.

The Pasig and Mandaluyong LGUs cancelled classes for students from daycare to senior high school, including the Alternative Learning System (ALS).

In Marikina, face-to-face and asynchronous classes in all levels, public and private schools, were suspended.

The suspension was announced in accordance with Department of Education Order No. 37, s. 2022, which states that classes in public schools are automatically suspended in areas where PAGASA raises Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The Parañaque City government announced the suspension of afternoon classes in all levels based on City Ordinance No. 2022-46.

Mayor Eric Olivarez advised residents in need of assistance due to typhoon Kristine to call the local hotline at 8820-PAQUE (7783), emergency hotline at 911 and for Smart at 0961-096-6249.

He also alerted offices delivering emergency services to be on alert and immediately respond to the needs of city residents.

In Pasay City, Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano declared the suspension of classes at 1:00 p.m. from Kindergarten to Senior High School, both in public and private schools.

Rubiano said the suspension of classes was made based on the Department of Education (DepEd) Order No.37 S2022 on the automatic suspension of classes once the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration issues a strong tropical cyclone wind signal in Metro Manila.

The Las Piñas City government also announced the suspension of afternoon classes in all levels, both in public and private schools.

Las Piñas Mayor Imelda Aguilar reminded students to just stay home and for city residents to prepare for the effect of typhoon Kristine.
