As Tropical Storm Kristine makes its way towards the main island of Luzon, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is taking measures to mitigate potential power outages.

In a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 22, Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications, said the power utility is prepared to address any electrical concerns that may arise due to the inclement weather.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), 24 areas in the country have been placed under Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1, as “Kristine” intensified earlier morning.

This prompted Meralco to take action in its franchise areas, assuring its consumers of its preparedness for any power concerns.  

“Our crews are on standby 24/7, ready to respond to any possible electricity service concern,” Zaldarriaga said.

“We also reiterate our call to the public to observe safety measures when using electrical devices and appliances, especially when there is flooding,” he added.

Meralco advised its customers to take precautionary measures to avoid any electrical hazards such as switching off the main electric power or circuit breaker when necessary, unplugging appliances from wall sockets, as well as turning off connected equipment and/or lightbulbs.

Furthermore, the electric utility firm reminded the public to avoid contact with any electrical facility when wet, remove mud and dirt from service equipment or fuse as well as wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes when dealing with any appliance like wires, connectors, and other wiring devices.

It also advised that a licensed electrician should check wiring systems for safety.

In preparation for the storm, Zaldarriaga encouraged to keep all communication channels open such as charging mobile phones, laptops, radios, and other communication devices. Having access to public service radio stations may also be essential in case of power outages.
