In his speech during the conferment of the Signum Meriti Award at DLSU’s 200th commencement exercises on Oct. 19, Laya honored both the institution and the graduates.

“As you stand at the cusp of a new chapter in your lives, take a moment to reflect on the history you now inherit and the legacy that you are tasked to continue,” Laya urged, emphasizing the rich history they now inherit and the legacy they are charged with continuing.

“DLSU, nearly a century old, is not just a place of learning. It is a pillar of Philippine society, shaping leaders in government, business, architecture, literature, and beyond,” Laya said.

Celebrating achievements, legacy

As graduates stood on the brink of a new chapter in their lives, Laya reminded the audience that “DLSU is not just an academic institution but a pillar of Philippine society,” having shaped leaders across various fields.

"You walk in the footsteps of the 'Greats'," he said, highlighting the importance of excellence, vision, and service, as reflected in some of the notable alumni of the university.

A world of change

Laya noted that the Class of 2024 is entering a “world that is markedly different” from the one they have known.

“The Philippines is different. The world is different,” Laya stated, noting the risks and opportunities presented by emerging technologies—especially artificial intelligence.

“Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, promise to revolutionize industries, but they also pose risks,” Laya said. “The world that you are graduating into is one of uncertainty and risk but also of great opportunity,” he added.

A call to action

In light of these changes and emerging challenges, Laya posed critical questions to the graduates: "How will you, the future leaders of the Philippines, contribute to minimizing that risk? How will you drive innovation and create a just, peaceful, and sustainable society?"

Laya then encouraged graduates to embrace technological advancements while remaining grounded in “what truly matters.”

“As you prepare to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead, do not lose sight of what truly matters,” Laya said.

He emphasized that success is not solely defined by professional achievements but also by the relationships nurtured and the lives touched along the way.

“As you balance the demands of career and ambition, never forget the importance of family, health, and a grounded life,” he added.

Upholding values in leadership

Meanwhile, Laya underscored the core values instilled at DLSU—faith, zeal for service, and communion in mission—to guide the graduates as they navigate their careers.

"Faith will give you the courage to confront uncertainty," Laya said, noting that zeal for service should drive them to use their talents for the betterment of others, particularly the marginalized.

Shaping a sustainable future

Laya expressed confidence in the graduates’ potential, stating that they “have the knowledge, the skills, and the values to lead.”

“As you step out into the world, may you not only seek success but also pursue creative success that uplifts others, builds communities, and shapes a future that is peaceful and sustainable,” Laya said.

As he assured the graduates that the journey ahead is theirs to shape, Laya urged them to “go forward with confidence, go forward with purpose, and go forward with the eyes of faith.”
