2,253 public schools in Western Visayas cancel classes due to tropical storm 'Kristine'


ILOILO CITY – The Department of Education-6 said that 2,253 public schools in Western Visayas region have cancelled classes due to tropical storm “Kristine.”

Hernani Escullar Jr., DepEd-6 information officer, said that physical classes were cancelled by local government units and school heads on Tuesday, Oct. 22, despite the absence of storm signals in any part of the region, and switched to Alternative Delivery Mode or ADM which was first implemented during the pandemic.

Negros Occidental, including the capital Bacolod City, was the most affected with 773 public schools.

The province of Antique had 512 schools shifting to ADM which was also implemented in 497 schools in Capiz; 419 in Iloilo province; 66 in Iloilo City, and 26 in Aklan province.

Escullar said schools may continue ADM if bad weather persists for the rest of the week.

Classes were also suspended on the college level in several areas  in the region, including Iloilo City.

Widespread flooding has been reported in certain areas of the region such as Bacolod City.
