Kapamilya stars Vhong Navarro and Jhong Hilario were emotional as popular dance group "The Streetboys" will reunite for a dance concert at the New Frontier Theater in Araneta City on Nov. 8.
"Yung saya ko ay sobra-sobra kasi for 31 years, ngayon lang namin naisip magkaroon ng reunion although hindi pa nabubura ang number namin sa kalendaryo na 31," said Jhong when asked how he felt about about the reunion during a press conference in Quezon City on Oct. 20.
Jhong adeed: "At least nakapag reunion kami at nagkasundo-sundo yung mga oras. Meron kasi kaming kasama na apat na OFWs: Joseph, Spencer, Michael and Sherwin. Nasa iba't ibang bansa sila and nagtugma ang schedule namin.
"So this is the time na tinuloy na namin ang reunion. Hindi na kami bumabata and gusto rin naman na magbigay ng pasasalamat para sa lahat ng sumuporta sa The Streetboys since Day 1. Magandang regalo namin ito sa kanila," said Jhong, now part of the popular noontime program "It's Showtime."
Vhong shared that he was feeling a mix of emotions about the upcoming reunion.
"May halong saya at lungkot ang reunion namin kasi after 31 years mangyayari na nga. Yung lungkot naman is kung bakit 31 years ngayon lang naisip? Pwede naman mas maaga di ba?" said Vhong, also one of the hosts of "It's Showtime."
However, Vhong said the group was formed with trust because they had not signed a contract with Direk Chito, who managed the group, since they started.
"Sa rehearsals nararamdaman namin yung sakit ng likod eh. Pero ang sarap lang isipin na sa loob ng 31 years with direk Chito Roño wala po kaming kontrata.
"Verbal lang na gagawin niya ang The Streetboys. Sa loob ng 31 years, magkakasama pa rin kami ngayon. Usap lang po yun," Vhong also said.
Vhong also said the group remained intact even though the dance group is not active anymore in showbiz.
"Yung pagtayo sa amin ni Direk Chito bilang tatay-tatayan, lumampas na rin at naging lolo-lolohan na rin. Yung mga anak namin parang mga apo niya na rin.
"Halos magkakasama pa rin kami pag Pasko at Bagong Taon. Kapag meron ding birthdays. Ganun siya nagtitiis sa amin at sumusuporta sa amin," Vhong added.
Chito expressed his pride in the group members who prioritized their lives over other distractions.
"I'm very proud na walang sinayang ang buhay sa kanila. May disiplina sila sa sarili. Nagkakamali rin paminsan-minsan pero bumabangon naman muli. Meron silang determinasyon at seryoso sa buhay," the award-winning director said.
Members of the group acknowledged that Sphencer Reyes was the most popular member of the dance team, but they were genuinely happy for him.
Meynard Marcellano, now an entrepreneur, said: "Masaya kami para sa kanya dahil part siya ng group namin eh. Parang tulad lang yan sa family na halimbawa may kamag-anak ka na sikat, you're happy and proud. Dala niya yung pangalan ng group."
Vhong added: "I remember meron kaming show sa Brunei, yung anak ng Prinsesa, ang crush si Sphencer. So inimbitahan kami, dahil dun, kasama kami na nag-show sa Brunei."
"Kung dala niya ang pangalan ng Streetboys, everybody ay kumikita rin sa kasikatan niya," Chito said.
Vhong added: "I think yun talaga ang time ni Sphencer. Siya rin yung naging artista."
"Totoong sikat siya. Pero kapag kasama namin siya sa loob, kung ano ang pagkakilala namin sa kanya, walang ere talaga. Hindi pa rin talaga siya nagbago. Marami kami kesa sa kanya," Meynard also said.
Also joining the media con were Danilo Barrios, Joey Andres, Joseph De Leon and Nicko Manalo.
Sphencer, who is based in London, could not attend the press conference as he was on a flight to Manila. He arrived last Sunday night.
In April, Sphencer performed in another dance concert dubbed "The Sign: 90s Supershow."
During a Zoom with the media, Sphencer said he is a proud and happy bus driver in London.
Sphencer said he was a nurse when he went to London. "Nag-aral ako ng nursing sa Pilipinas kasi hindi ka makakapunta rito sa London kung de-derecho ka as bus driver. Kailangan may skills ka rin. And then may kumuha sa aking employer. Then nag shift ako as a bus driver because of the benefits. Nagustuhan ko yung offer. I've been here for 16 years. Six or seven of those years as a bus driver."
He admitted to having experienced discrimination but in minor cases only. Sphencer said his wife Sheila Reyes is also working in a bank in London. They have three children.
