The Panguil Bay Bridge, a flagship project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), earned the Grand Prize at the 2024 Excellent Structure Awards presented by the Korean Institute of Bridge and Structural Engineering (KIBSE).

DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, who also serves as National President of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), accepted the award during the 50th anniversary convention of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers (KSCE) in Jeju Island, South Korea, on Oct. 16.

Inaugurated on Sept. 27 by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, the 3.7-kilometer bridge connects Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, to Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

As Mindanao’s longest sea-crossing bridge, the project was financed through Korean official development assistance, integrating advanced engineering practices in line with the government's “Build Better More” infrastructure program.

The award recognizes the bridge’s innovative design, structural integrity, and its role in improving regional transportation and economic development.

DPWH’s collaboration with South Korean engineers was integral to the project's success, demonstrating the department’s adherence to global engineering standards.

Sadain praised the efforts of the Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) engineers, highlighting the bridge as a testament to the strong engineering partnership between the Philippines and South Korea.

The DPWH and PICE delegation’s participation in the 2024 KSCE Convention signifies the Philippines' rising prominence in infrastructure development in Southeast Asia.

PICE will hold its 50th National Convention and 2nd International Engineering Expo from Oct. 29 to 31 in Pasay City, which will focus on strengthening international partnerships and advancing the construction of the PICE National Building.
