'Deeply troubling': Group demands investigation into alleged anomalies in Duterte-led DepEd

A group of education workers demanded accountability for the alleged corruption in the Department of Education (DepEd) under the leadership of former Education Secretary, Vice President Sara Duterte.

“These allegations are deeply troubling and cannot be ignored,” ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua said in a statement issued Oct. 20. He was referring to “alarming reports of corruption” within the DepEd, allegedly linked to Duterte.

ACT noted that these reports, involving cash envelopes allegedly received by DepEd executives, “highlight the urgent need to address corruption while our educators continue to face severe neglect.”

The group is demanding a “full investigation into these corruption anomalies” and insisted on holding Duterte “accountable if implicated.”

Take decisive action

Following reports of alleged anomalies at DepEd under Duterte’s term, ACT called on President Marcos to “speak out and take decisive action.”

“Empty promises are not enough; we need concrete measures to uplift our educators and restore public trust in our educational institutions,” Quetua said.

ACT, along with hundreds of faculty club organizations, also reiterated their demand that the government prioritize comprehensive reforms—including substantial salary increases, workload reduction, and enhanced support systems for teachers.

“These steps are essential to uphold the dignity of the teaching profession and enrich the quality of education for Filipino students,” ACT said.
