Magnitude-6.1 quake jolts Catanduanes

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck offshore of Catanduanes on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

The quake, which occurred at 5:19 a.m., had its epicenter 81 kilometers northeast of Bagamanoc, Catanduanes, Phivolcs said.

It was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Virac, Catanduanes.

Meanwhile, it was registered at Intensity III (weak) in Gatchitorena, Cabusao, Ragay, Gainza, Goa, and Lagonoy in Camarines Sur and Palapag, Laoang, Pambujan, San Roque, and Mondragon in Northern Samar.

The tremor was “slightly felt” (Intensity II) in Paracale, Basud, Sipocot, and San Vicente in Camarines Norte; Nabua, City of Iriga, Bombon, Calabanga, Camaligan, Canaman, Magarao, Ocampo, Pili, Tigaon, Tinambac, San Jose, and Siruma in Camarines Sur; Gamay, Catarman, Bobon, San Jose, Lavezares, Allen, San Isidro, Victoria, Catubig, and Las Navas in Northern Samar; City of Calbayog, and Samal.

It was “scarcely perceptible” (Intensity I) in Bulan and Irosin in Sorsogon and Lope de Vega and Mapanas in Northern Samar.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic, which means it was caused by an active fault near the area.

The public is advised to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
