DSWD vows no politics in social welfare assistance

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reaffirmed its commitment to keep social protection programs free from political meddling.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao on Thursday, Oct. 17 explained the existing policies designed to ensure the independence of the agency’s initiatives.

“In prior years, we have issued guidelines to insulate the programs and services of the department from any forms of political interference, while still respecting our partnerships with local government units,” Dumlao said in a mix of English and Filipino.

She said that DSWD has implemented various mechanisms to educate beneficiaries about their voting rights, particularly through the Family Development Sessions (FDS) of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Dumlao explained that one of the FDS modules focuses on active citizenship, which aims to inform participants about making independent electoral choices.

“We empower our partner beneficiaries to understand that these programs originate from the national government and should not influence their decision-making during elections,” she said.

Dumlao added that DSWD remains committed to assisting those in need, regardless of whether they come through referrals or walk-ins.

“We always emphasize that both walk-in clients and those with referrals are welcomed. Our social workers conduct thorough validation and assessment processes to ensure that we are assisting individuals who truly require help," she said.
