Marbil approves gun ban in NCR for Asia-Pacific conference on disaster risk reduction

Starting Monday, Oct, 14, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be implementing a gun ban in Metro Manila as part of the security measures for the five-day Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

The recommendation for the suspension of the Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence (PTCFOR) was approved by PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil from Oct. 14 to midnight of Oct. 18.

In a memorandum, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said the suspension of the PTCFOR is meant to ensure no firearm-related incident will occur during the event, adding that it is part of the comprehensive strategy to ensure the smooth, efficient organization and successful hosting of the conference.

"In addition, only members of the PNP, AFP and other law enforcement agencies who are performing official duties and wearing their agency prescribed uniforms will be allowed to carry firearms," the memorandum read.

"This is to ensure that the activity will be free from firearm-related incidents and the safety of the populace," it added.

Around 4,000 delegates from 69 countries are expected to join the conference.

Malacanang earlier ordered the suspension of classes and work in the government in Manila and Pasay cities on Sunday and Monday.
