Phivolcs: Smog in Metro Manila due to pollutants, not Taal 'vog'

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Thursday, Oct. 10 that the smog observed in Metro Manila is primarily due to “anthropogenic pollutants” and not volcanic smog, or “vog,” from the Taal Volcano.
Based on its visual monitoring, Phivolcs said the vog remains concentrated over the Taal Caldera region.
Taal Volcano had a minor phreatic eruption at 7:21 a.m. on Thursday, producing a plume that reached a height of 2.8 kilometers.
However, Phivolcs said the air quality in Metro Manila has not been adversely affected by Taal’s volcanic activity.
Citing the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s meteorological data, Phivolcs said the wind speed is low at less than 1 meter per second, which decreases the likelihood of volcanic gases reaching Metro Manila.
