The city government intensified its efforts for the protection of the environment as well as the implementation of its anti-littering law.
Sisiguruhin natin na ito ay maipapatupad sa bawat sulok ng Malabon (We have intensified our operations for maintaining cleanliness in Malabon. This is not only because of the reports we receive about the piles of garbage in the areas, but because we also want to eliminate the garbage problem in Malabon which is the cause of Malabueños getting sick and the blockage and flooding in city. We have an enforced law, so hopefully the citizens will follow it. We will ensure that this is implemented in every corner of Malabon),” Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said.
Through the implementation of City Ordinance 14-2011 or the Malabon Anti-Littering Ordinance, the City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO), in coordination with the Public Safety and Traffic Management Office, already apprehended 371 individuals from January to October this year, including residents and non-residents, who were caught improperly disposing of waste on the city roads and waterways.
The ordinance prohibits the dumping, placing, throwing, and scattering of different types of wastes, including plastic, cigarette butts, and in any areas that were not considered garbage dumping places in Malabon (public places, establishments/properties, riverbanks, waterways, etc.)
Individuals caught violating the ordinance for the first time will be fined P500 and required to perform 8 hours of community service, while second-time offenders will be fined P1,000 and subject to a compulsory seminar for 1 day.
Those caught violating the ordinance for the third time (or more) must settle a P1,500 fine and community service for one week.
Corporations and establishments that violate the law will also be penalized with P3,000 for their first offense, P4,000 for a second offense, and P5,000 and cancellation of business permits for their third offense.
The ordinance also requires household owners/caretakers/tenants and owners of establishments and idle lots to always keep the surroundings of their buildings clean and sanitary.
We will remain focused on our activities for the cleanliness of our environment because this is also our requirement to prevent greater disasters especially if there is a typhoon or other calamity),”Mayor Sandoval said.
