‘Julian’ intensifies into super typhoon as it slowly moves away from the Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Julian” (international name “Krathon”) became a super typhoon while moving slowly away from the country on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 230 kph.

Based on the latest update, the center of Julian was located 205 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes.

The highest tropical cyclone wind warning currently in effect due to Julian is Signal No. 2. PAGASA is no longer expecting to raise Signal No. 5.

Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern portion of Ilocos Norte, and northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan.

Signal No. 1 also remains in effect over the rest of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, the rest of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, northern portion of Aurora, and northern portion of Nueva Ecija.

Moreover, PAGASA said intense to torrential rainfall (over 200 millimeters) may persist in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Ilocos Norte.

Heavy to intense rainfall (100 to 200 millimeters) may also continue to affect Apayao, Abra, and Ilocos Sur. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 millimeters) may prevail over mainland Cagayan, the rest of Ilocos Region, and the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region.

Meanwhile, Central Luzon may experience scattered light to occasional heavy rains and thunderstorms due to the trough or extension of Julian.

Its trough may also bring isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA said Julian is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Thursday, Oct. 3.
