'Julian' exits PAR but may re-enter on October 2

Super Typhoon “Julian” (international name “Krathon”) left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday, Oct. 1, but the State weather bureau said there is still a possibility that it could re-enter on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Julian was located 235 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes, and is moving slowly westward.

PAGASA said the super typhoon is expected to recurve towards the sea southwest of Taiwan until Wednesday morning, before making landfall over southwestern Taiwan.

Afterwards, it will move northeast towards the East China Sea and exit the PAR by Thursday evening or early Friday, Oct. 3 or 4.

Based on PAGASA’s latest update, Julian slightly intensified, packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 240 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern portion of Ilocos Norte, and northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan.

Signal No. 1 also remains in effect over the rest of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, the rest of mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, northern portion of Aurora, and northern portion of Nueva Ecija.

PAGASA said heavy to intense rainfall (100 to 200 millimeters) may persist in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Ilocos Norte.

Moderate to heavy rainfall (50 to 100 millimeters) may also continue to affect mainland Cagayan, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, and Cordillera Administrative Region.

Meanwhile, Central Luzon may experience scattered light to occasional heavy rains and thunderstorms due to the trough or extension of Julian.

Its trough may also bring isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
