ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Health-9 recorded a total of 60 fireworks-related injuries in Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) as it winded up its fireworks-related injuries surveillance on Friday, January 6.
No deaths due to firecrackers were reported.
Zamboanga City recorded the highest number of injuries with 21. A third of those were treated at the government-run Zamboanga City Medical Center.
This city was followed by Zamboanga del Sur with 14; Zamboanga del Norte, 12; Zamboanga Sibugay, six; Isabela City, four; and three cases from other areas that were not specified.
A total of 37 injuries were sustained from Piccolo, a firecracker classified as illegal under Republic Act 7183, An Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, and Use of Firecrackers and Other Pyrotechnic Devices.
Other firecrackers that caused injuries according to the DOH-9 were Triangle, Kwitis, “boga” (improvised cannon), Lantaka, Bombshell, Dragon, Roman Candle, and Whistle Bomb.
The figures which were higher than last year were taken from December 21 to January 6.
