Mendoza orders sustained crackdown vs overloaded trucks, trailers
Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Asst. Sec. Vigor D. Mendoza II has ordered a sustained crackdown against overloaded trucks and trailers, saying they threaten road safety and sometimes result in fatal road accidents.
Mendoza said they continue to receive complaints of overloaded trucks and trailers causing not only fatal accidents but also damage to road and bridge.
“We need to seriously run after them because more than the damage to roads and bridges, they also threaten the safety of all road users,” he added.
Several cases of multiple vehicle damage and multiple fatalities have been recorded in the past due to overloaded trucks and trailers along national highways.
Overloading is one of the main violations in the past few years. In 2023, the LTO recorded around P42.7 million in penalties from overloading of motor vehicles, especially trucks and trailers.
The 2023 data reflected a decrease in the apprehended violators and the LTO attributed this to the intensified campaign especially during the second half of last year.
“Our strict implementation of laws on overloading is one of the measures that we could do to ensure safety of road users,” said Mendoza.
