Marcos to monitor barangay compliance in nationwide clean-up drive

Barangays in the country will be assessed for their implementation of the nationwide clean-up program every month, President Marcos announced, saying he will closely monitor the program.

In a video message on Tuesday, Jan. 9, Marcos said he will closely monitor and sustain the positive momentum of the “Kalinisan sa Bagong Pilipinas” nationwide clean-up drive arising from efforts of barangay and youth officials around the country.

"Ang kaayusan at kalinisan sa bawat barangay ay gagawin nating tuloy-tuloy; buwan-buwan na susukatin ang performance ng Barangay Council, at kikilalanin natin at pararangalan natin ang mga outstanding na performance (Maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of every barangay will continue; the performance of the barangay council will be assessed and those with outstanding performance will be rewarded),” Marcos said.

“Higit sa lahat, ang kaayusan at kalinisan sa bawat barangay ay tutukan ng inyong Pangulo (Most importantly, the orderliness and cleanliness of every village will be monitored by your president)," he added.

The President emphasized the crucial role of consistency of “bayanihan” efforts, particularly in cleaning up roads, canals, markets and schools towards greener, healthier and safer communities across the country.

The nationwide clean-up effort started during the National Community Development Day on Jan. 6.

According to Interior Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr., over 5.1 million kilograms of trash were collected by about 1,234,844 participating individuals and 245,393 local officials since the clean-up program began.

It can be recalled that on Jan. 5, Marcos ordered village officials and the citizenry to work together in achieving a clean Philippines, stressing that their initiative is what the country needs to win the war against waste.

The Chief Executive underscored that when it comes to cleanliness, constructive action will always be better than any app, noting that the government can only do so much.
