Preserving heritage: Caritas PH advocates recognition for jeepney drivers amidst public transportation modernization efforts
While the Philippine government pushes for a modernized public transportation system, the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Caritas Philippines, called for a "just and inclusive" approach that still protects jeepney drivers and showcases Filipino ingenuity.

In a statement issued on Monday, Jan. 8, Caritas President Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo emphasized safeguarding jeepney operators' livelihoods and called for a "just transition" with fair compensation, retraining, and financial support.
"We must find solutions that honor our heritage and showcase Filipino ingenuity while simultaneously building a future-oriented public transport system that addresses the needs of a growing population," he said.
Beyond livelihoods, the organization also stressed the need to preserve Filipino heritage during modernization.
"Jeepneys are much more than just a mode of transport; they're an embodiment of our rich cultural tapestry," Bagaforo said.
He also highlighted the need for fair compensation and livelihood support for jeepney drivers, including access to retraining programs and financial assistance.
"These families are not just statistics; they are our neighbors, our brothers and sisters," he said.
"We cannot let them fall through the cracks during this transition," he added.
Bagaforo further explained that the organization welcomed the government's commitment to improving public transportation. Yet, he cautioned against leaving thousands of Filipinos behind.
"We cannot condone a modernization process that disregards the human cost," Caritas PH said.
"We urge the government to ensure a just transition that protects the livelihoods of jeepney operators and drivers, who are the backbone of our transportation system while also laying the groundwork for a more efficient, interconnected, and cost-effective mass transport network that benefits all," it added.
Bagaforo also pointed out the potential of "locally developed" clean, renewable energy-powered vehicles by Filipino engineers and entrepreneurs.
"We have brilliant Filipino engineers and entrepreneurs who are developing innovative solutions for clean transportation," Bagaforo said.
"Let's support them and create a future where our public transport is not only efficient but also sustainable," he added.
The organization stated that building a modern and green public transport system must be based on social justice, environmental responsibility, and a commitment to progress and efficiency.
"Let us work together to create a transportation system that benefits all Filipinos while protecting our planet for future generations," Caritas PH added.
