Matthew Wright becomes fastest Filipino to hit 1,000 points in Japan B.League

After just 80 games of playing in the Japanese league, Wright joined his fellow Filipinos Thirdy and Kiefer Ravena, Dwight Ramos and Ray Parks Jr. in their little 1000-point club in the league.

On the league’s opening weekend of 2024, the sophomore import became the latest Filipino to hit at least 1k points just right after his first basket in Kyoto Hannaryz’s 99-83 defeat at the hands of the Chiba Jets where he eventually finished 17 points on the losing end.

Kiefer, whose Lakes have been demoted to the league’s second tier after his second season, left his B1 scoring record at 1,252.

Shiga is poised for a promotion back to the first division as it currently leads the West standings with a commendable 23-7 tally, with Kiefer keeping up with his numbers after averaging 11.9 points and 5.9 assists a game.

Meanwhile, Parks Jr. achieved 1,000 individual points in the Nagoya Dolphins’ 92-79 loss against Thirdy’s second-seeded San-En NeoPhoenix on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The 30-year-old guard has averaged 6.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest in the ongoing season.

The Dolphins’ hung tough with a 16-12 win-loss record in the standings.

Likewise, Ramos ended the past year reaching the same milestone after a lengthy injury layoff for the most part of the season.

The Gilas guard’s Levanga Hokkaido suffered back-to-back losses against the Sun Rockers Shibuya over the weekend to drop further with an 8-20 slate.

Thirdy, who opened the doors for other Filipino players when he took the career leap to Japan in 2020, was the also the first Pinoy to record 1,000 points in B.League.

San-En emerged victorious on its weekend playdates after repeating over Nagoya.

The NeoPhoenix slipped past the Dolphins, 80-74, on Sunday, Jan. 7, to improve their tally to 24-4 just behind league-leading Alvark Tokyo with the same record.

Thirdy delivered 13 points, three rebounds and seven assists in the squad’s most recent win.
