CEBU CITY – A 52-year-old man is facing charges for beating a dog to death in Mandaue City.
Alfredo Villarubia Mabesa, a resident of Sitio Kamanggahan, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue, will be charged for violating Republic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act.
Animal advocates from the Island Rescue Organization (IRO) vowed to take legal action after some concerned citizens reported the alleged animal abuse to them.
According to IRO, Mabesa was seen hitting a dog in Barangay Basak with a piece of wood.
The incident happened on Saturday, January 6.
Upon receiving the information, IRO members confronted Mabesa about the incident.
Mabesa allegedly admitted striking the dog with a piece of wood that led to its death.
The man admitted placing the dog in a sack and dumping it in a grassy area in Barangay Pagsabungan, Mandaue.
IRO members went to the area where the dog was dumped and found the animal’s body in a sack.
Authorities have warned the public that animal cruelty is punishable by law. The public was also advised to immediately report cases of animal maltreatment.
