The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Sunday, Jan. 7, issued safety guidelines and reminders in anticipation of the large number of devotees at the Quirino Grandstand from Jan. 7 to 9 to witness this year’s Traslacion.
PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon emphasized the need for vigilance and reminded the public about the possible dangers of large crowds, such as stampedes and certain health problems.
“Millions of Filipino Catholics will brave the massive heat of the sun to participate in the Traslacion. Large crowds and long exposure in the sun may lead to dehydration, hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, and diarrhea,” Gordon said.
“We shared our safety tips on our social media platforms detailing what participants should do and prepare for during the festivities,” he added.
The chairman then urged everyone to prioritize their well-being to have a safe and peaceful Traslacion.
As part of PRC's preparedness and response operation this year, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang shared that the organization has further improved its annual assistance for Black Nazarene devotees.
Moreover, she advised that little children, the elderly, and pregnant women virtually attend the grand procession for safety.
“We also encourage pregnant women, children, and the elderly to attend the grand procession virtually, considering the emergencies PRC encountered in previous Traslacion, including major medical issues like cardiac arrest and childbirth,” she said.
