QC commemorates 212th birthday of Melchora 'Tandang Sora' Aquino


The Quezon City local government commemorated the 212th birthday of Melchora “Tandang Sora” Aquino at Tandang Sora National Shrine in Barangay Tandang Sora, Quezon City, on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte together with QC Vice Mayor Gian Sotto led the offering of flowers at the tomb of Tandang Sora hailed as the "Mother of the Revolution".

According to Belmonte, Tandang Sora's life reminds the Filipino people that age and gender are not barriers to helping others and becoming a significant part of our history.

Joining the offering of flowers were District 6 Rep. Redrico Maranan, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) - Quezon City District Fire Marshall FSSupt. Flor-Ian Guerrero Flor-Ian Guerrero, Schools Division Superintendent Carleen Sedilla, QC Department heads, Barangay Tandang Sora P/B Marlou Ulanday, Women's Action for Integrity and Success (WAIS) head Marilyn Torevillas, the Association of Tandang Sora's Grandchildren, and members of the Knights of Columbus.

Tandang Sora is considered the "Mother of the Philippine Revolution” for her bravery as she offered her store as a refuge of the sick and wounded revolutionaries.

Her store became the secret meeting place of the revolutionaries in August 1896.

Aquino is also called “Woman of Revolution” and “Mother of Balintawak”.
