His passing was announced in a Facebook post by the St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary of Mindanao.

"It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved Archbishop,” the post stated.

It said that the information was conveyed by the current archbishop of Davao, Romulo Valles, the secretariat of the CBCP.

Capalla served as President of the CBCP for one term, from 2003 to 2005.

He dedicated his life to the church by starting his seminary studies at the Saint Vincent Ferrer Seminary in Jaro, Iloilo City, from 1950 to 1961.

In 1987, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the newly created Prelature of Saint Mary's in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

He became the Coadjutor on June 28, 1994, and was formally installed as the third archbishop and metropolitan of the archdiocese in 1996.

His death came four days after Bishop Ronald Lunas of Pagadian died in a Davao hospital due to complications of heart bypass surgery on Jan. 2.
