OZAMIZ CITY – Police said they have solved a P30-million pawnshop robbery at the Gaisano Mall here on New Year's Day following the arrest of five "peryahan" or carnival workers allegedly involved in the incident.
Ozamiz City Police Station officer-in-charge, Police Major Dennis Tano, said the suspects were arrested on January 1 in an all-out hot-pursuit operation. A criminal case for robbery has been forwarded to the Ozamiz City Prosecutor’s Office on January 3 for filing against the suspects whose identity were not disclosed.

Suspects are under the custody of the police here pending commitment to a jail facility, said Tano.
Tano said they are pursuing the mastermind of the robbery.
"We consider this as case solved, pero iyon nga hindi tayo hihinto na ma-identify at ma-filan natin ng kaso ang mastermind (We won't stop until we identify and file a case against the mastermind)," he said.
Tano said that based on their initial investigation and profiling of the suspects, they operated on their own and do not belong to any group.
"Lokal lang itong nga suspects, so far wala namang mga records, pero iyong tatlo from Tangub City known as magnanakaw sa area (These suspects are local and have no records but three of them are known thieves in Tangub City)," he said.
Recovered during the pursuit operation were several pieces of clothing for a horrow show in the carnival believed to have been used by the suspects during the commission of the robbery.
These led to the identification of the suspects.
Peryahan owner Josephine Fernandez confirmed the suspects are her workers and have been employed for years.
She said the pieces of evidence were used by her workers during the performance.
Fernandez said they can do nothing but wait for the result of the investigation.
She pitied the suspects and said they are good people, regular operators of the horror show and have worked with her even before they got married and now have children.

Three establishments and an Automated Teller Machine in the mall were robbed and initial inventory showed that P30.6 million worth of cash and jewelry were taken.
Suspects allegedly entered the mall by digging a hole from a nearby drainage leading to the food court area which also served as their possible exit.
Police are gathering intelligence to identify other persons involved in the robbery.
"We call on the public to cooperate with the authorities and report any information that may lead to the arrest of other persons involved," said Tano.
He assured the people that they remain committed to maintaining peace and order.
