Mechanic sets himself on fire in pilgrimage site

MANAOAG, Pangasinan – A 55-year-old mechanic allegedly set himself on fire in a popular pilgrimage site here on Thursday, January 4.

The victim was identified as Luisito Pineda Buenaventura of Barangay Botao, Santa Barbara, this province.

Police said they received a call from Barangay Pugaro Kagawad (councilor) Shaquille Muñoz that the remains of a burnt person were found at Virgin’s Well.

Investigation said a caretaker, Leonardo Dioso Mosada, 25, noticed an unattended motorcycle in the parking area.

Mosada looked for the owner and discovered a burnt body in a grassy part of Virgin’s Well.

He called the police who identified the victim through his mobile phone which they recovered and had a video of him before his self-immolation at about 11:42 a.m.

Police said the victim intentionally poured gasoline on his body and ignited himself to death.

A post-mortem examination was conducted by the Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Ela Camille Romero Baltazar.
