DILG to launch environmental drive on January 6 via 'bayanihan' scheme

DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos (MB FILE PHOTO)The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will launch on Saturday, Jan. 6, the ‘Kalinisan Program’, an initiative that will consolidate all efforts to maintain and provide a healthy and safe environment for the public by capacitating all local government units (LGUs) and enabling community participation anchored on the traditional ‘bayanihan’ scheme.

Also referred to as ‘Kalinga at Inisyatiba para sa Malinis na Bayan program, DILG Memorandum Circular (MC) 2024-001 noted the measure aims to raise public awareness and participation on environmental responsibilities through proper waste management, encourage the LGUs to invest in programs on solid waste management and ecological practices and establish a recognition system for the cleanest LGUs.

Pursuant to Proclamation No. 341, the program’s launch coincides with the Annual Community development day, which the DILG stressed is very relevant to the cause as both promote “self-help development in the time-honored Filipino tradition of bayanihan.”

“Relative thereto, all barangays, to be led by the newly-elected and appointed Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials are hereby enjoined to observe the day, fittingly in order, by conducting their respective Kalinisan day activities on January 6,’’ the DILG said.

DILG Secretary Benjamin “Benhur’’ Abalos Jr. directed all DILG regional directors to ensure the compliance of all the LGUs in their respective jurisdictions, coordinate with regional and local media outlets for coverage of their respective clean-up drive activities and hold media conferences when possible.

The DILG emphasized that the program “is aligned with the Bagong Pilipinas campaign, fostering the state's commitment towards a deep and fundamental transformation in all sectors of society.’’
