Cold weather persists in parts of PH due to ‘amihan’


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Wednesday, Jan. 31, that the northeast monsoon, also known as “amihan,” will continue to bring cold weather to some parts of the country.

PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said the northeast monsoon will still affect Luzon and Visayas.

"Patuloy pa ring umiiral ang northeast monsoon o amihan dito sa bahagi ng Luzon at Visayas kung saan dala pa rin nito iyong malamig na panahon lalo na sa madaling araw at tyansa ng pag-ulan o mahihinang pag-ambon (The northeast monsoon or amihan continues to prevail in parts of Luzon and Visayas, bringing cold weather, especially in the early morning, and a chance of rain showers)," said Castañeda.

Based on the PAGASA’s monitoring, the top 10 areas with the lowest temperatures in the country on Wednesday were: Baguio City (12.6°C); La Trinidad, Benguet (13°C); Basco, Batanes (17.6°C); Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (17.8°C); Sinait, Ilocos Sur (18.6°C); Tanay, Rizal (18.9°C); Dagupan City, Pangasinan (20°C); Abucay, Bataan (20.1°C); Science Garden, Quezon City (20.1°C); and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (20.2°C).

The lowest temperature recorded in the country so far this year was 9.7°C in La Trinidad, Benguet on Jan. 29.
