Police Major Windel Abellana, information officer of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CCPO), said speculations that these cobras that had been sighted in the past few days were dropped from a helicopter in Cebu mountains are baseless.

Abellana advised the public not to believe these unfounded theories that are being spread on social media.

Instead, the public should contact barangay officials or personnel of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office if there are sightings of the venomous snake in their areas, said Abellana.

“We would like to advise the Cebuanos to be alert and be careful in areas where there is likely to be the presence of this deadly reptile. Do not panic whenever you see snakes in your locality. Instead contact your barangay officials so that they could address the concern immediately,” said Abellana.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central Visayas has said the frequent sightings of king cobras could be attributed to the mating season.

The CPPO has coordinated with the family of a 64-year-old farmer who was found dead in Barangay Babayongan, Dalaguete town, Cebu.

There were reports that the fatality, Maximan Milan, was bitten by a cobra when he was found lifeless in a grassy area on Tuesday, January 30.

The farmer was suspected to have been bitten by a snake because of bite marks in his leg.

Abellana said they had advised the family of the fatality to have the body autopsied to determine the cause of death.

“We recommended to have the body autopsies so that our approach on the matter is scientific because it would be difficult if we will come up with an assessment without enough basis,” Abellana said.

According to the family, the farmer pastured his goats around 6 a.m. but failed to return him since then.
