2 Filipino crew dead, 4 Chinese hurt in collision of passenger vessel, water taxi off Batangas

Two Filipino crew died while four Chinese were injured when a passenger vessel and a water taxi collided off Verde Island in Batangas on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said that passenger vessel "Ocean Jet 6" and water jet "Hop & Go 1" struck each other around 12:30 p.m.

The boat captain and third mate of Hop & Go 1 died in the incident, according to Coast Guard Station Batangas commander Captain Jerome Jeciel. The identities of the fatalities are yet to be released.

Based on a report from the PCG, Ocean Jet 6 was underway from Batangas to Calapan while Hop & Go 1 was en route to Batangas from Puerto Galera when the maritime incident occurred. 

Meanwhile, four Chinese passengers of Hop & Go 1 sustained injuries to their bodies. A Swedish and two other Chinese passengers of the water jet were also unharmed.

All 105 passengers and 19 crew of Ocean Jet 6 were also deemed safe and in good physical condition. They were transported to Calapan Port for further assessment.

"The wounded passengers are now receiving needed medical assistance while the authorities are coordinating with the bereaved families of the two Filipino crew," PCG spokesperson Rear Adm. Armand Balilo.

PCG Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Balilo said two crew members of Hop & Go 1 water jet proceeded to the Coast Guard Sub-Station Puerto Galera to provide sworn statements on the incident.

As of press time, Balilo said the responding team was towing Hop & Go 1 water jet to Puerto Galera where its yard is located.
