- The agricultural and fisheries production value increased by 0.7% in the final three months of the previous year, driven by higher production of crops, livestock, and poultry.<br>The value of crop production rose by 0.1%, with palay production up by 0.1%. Notable increases were seen in the production of mango (11.4%), calamansi (4.0%), pineapple (3.8%), onion (3.4%), and ampalaya (3.2%).<br>Livestock production expanded by 2.7%, with hog production up by 3.7%, goat production by 1.3%, and dairy production by 17.2%.<br>Poultry production saw an increase in the value of production at 7.8%, with growth across chicken (8.1%), chicken eggs (7.8%), duck (0.6%), and duck eggs (0.3%).<br>The latest performance marks the first growth in four years after the -0.1% in 2022, -1.7% in 2021, and -1.2% in 2020.
Following three consecutive years of decline, the local farm output posted a marginal recovery last year, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.
In the last quarter of last year, the value of agricultural and fisheries production rose by 0.7 percent, primarily due to increased output of crops, livestock, and poultry.
The fourth quarter growth was a turnaround from the one percent contraction posted in the same period the previous year.
The expansion in the agriculture sector for January to December reached 0.4 percent, an improvement from the 0.1 percent decline in 2022.
The full-year 2023 performance marked the first growth in four years, following -0.1 percent in 2022, -1.7 percent in 2021, and -1.2 percent in 202.
The value of crop output inched up by 0.1 percent, with palay also rising by 0.1 percent.
The largest growth was registered in the production of mango, soaring by 11.4 percent, calamansi by four percent, pineapple by 3.8 percent, onion by 3.4 percent, and ampalaya by 3.2 percent.
Livestock production expanded by 2.7 percent, driven by a 3.7 percent jump in hogs, a 1.3 percent rise in goat production, and a 17.2 percent surge in dairy production.
However, declines were reported in cattle and carabao.
Poultry production similarly posted a surge in the value of production, increasing by 7.8 percent, with all commodities posting growth: chicken by 8.1 percent, chicken eggs by 7.8 percent, duck by 0.6 percent, and duck eggs by 0.3 percent.
However, the fisheries subsector experienced a contraction, with its value of production falling by 5.2 percent.
Significant drops were recorded in fimbriated sardines (tunsoy), decreasing by 34.2 oercent, threadfin bream (bisugo) by 31.6 percent, blue crab (alimasag) by 31.2 percent, tiger prawn (sugpo) by 15.4 percent, and cavalla (talakitok) by 2.6 percent.
