CNN Philippines closure 'a great loss' to public information, Padilla says

Sen. Robinhood Padilla considers the impending closure of CNN Philippines a "great loss" to public information.

In a statement, Padilla, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media, noted the loss of CNN Philippines is taking place amid much politicking in the country.

"Bayan ko. Sa kalagitnaan ng politicking sa lahat ng sulok, ito po ang magaganap sa public information (My country. Amid all the politicking, this is what happens to our public information)," he said.

"O Allah, patawarin mo ako sa aking mga nakaraang pagkakamali at gabayan mo ako patungo sa tamang landas (O Allah, forgive me for my past mistakes and guide me towards the right path)," he added.

Padilla then called on the media industry to help combat fake news.

In a statement, Nine Media Corporation (NMC) said it will discontinue the news and production operations of CNN Philippines on all media platforms effective Jan. 31, 2024. CNN Philippines first aired in March 2015 using RPN 9’s free TV frequency after NMC secured a licensing deal.

In posts on its social media accounts, it thanked its viewers, partners, and staff over the past nine years.
