Woman dies, 26 hurt in jeepney plunge


SAN FRANCISCO, Quezon – A woman died and 26 were injured after a passenger jeepney plunged into a canal in Sitio Sentro, Barangay Butanguiad, this town, on Tuesday afternoon, January 2.

Police identified the fatality as Juanita Sarmiento.

Injured were Trexia Joy Sarmiento, Bernadeth Sarmiento, Ronald Jun Abelong, Melchor Sarmiento, Arjay Sarmiento, Allan Pauli, Arnulfo Pacatan, Salvador Purton, Jomar Purton, Jeffrey Rosatase, Jose Jeory Puron, Jeraldy Tumabiao, June Mark Apeta;

Isaias Garbo Jr., Irish Sarmiento, Jeremie Purton, Marian Gonzales, Michelle Gonzales, Mark Leo Sarmiento, Rommel Montejo, Charles Llagas, Evenson Sarmiento, Ashley Mae Sarmiento, Jonathan Sarmiento, Trixie Jane Sarmiento, and Brian Catapang, jeepney driver.

Police said the jeepney with license plates DWG-523 lost its brake and fell into an open canal on the road shoulder while negotiating the uphill portion of the San Andres-San Francisco Road.

Lawmen and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office took the victims to a hospital here where Juanita was declared dead.
