Magnitude 5.3 aftershock jolts Surigao del Sur — Phivolcs


A 5.3-magnitude aftershock jolted Surigao del Sur at 9:11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor was an aftershock of the 7.4-magnitude quake that rocked Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur on Dec. 3, 2023.

The epicenter of the aftershock was located 32 kilometers (km) southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at a shallow depth of 10 km.

Phivolcs said the quake was strong at Intensity V in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

Its instruments also recorded Intensity III (weak) in the City of Bislig, Surigao Del Sur and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.

The earthquake was tectonic, which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs said no damage and no aftershock was expected.
