BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.1 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur province on Wednesday morning, January 3.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was recorded at 9:11 a.m. and its epicenter was 32 kilometers (kms) southeast of Hinatuan town, Surigao del Sur.

The earthquake had a depth of 25 kms, Phivolcs said, and was caused by the Philippine Trench.
It was felt at Intensity V in Bislig City and Hinatuan, Intensity III in Tandag City and Lingig town; and Intensity II in Tagbina, Lianga, Bayabas, and Cagwait, all in Surigao del Sur.
No damage or injuries are expected and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Caraga and Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury from the earthquake.
Phivolcs said this tremor is an aftershock of the magnitude 7.4-earthquake that hit Surigao del Sur on December 2.
