Cop accidentally kills self while cleaning gun in Baguio


BAGUIO CITY – A 26-year-old policeman was killed after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his service firearm inside his house in Barangay Pinsao Pilot here on Tuesday night, January 2.

The victim was identified as Police Patrolman Jumeko Mangibong Potennec, 26, assigned to the Baguio City Police Office-Station 7.

The incident occurred at 6:30 p.m. and was reported to the police at 8:45 p.m. on January 2 after the BCPO-Station 2 received a call from the Baguio City Hospital and Medical Center that a man was taken to the hospital for a bullet wound.

Investigation said the victim’s son saw his father cleaning his caliber 9mm Zigana PX-9 gun while sitting on the sofa in their house.

After 10 minutes, a gunshot was heard and the boy saw his grandfather shouting for help to take Potennec to the hospital.

The victim was declared dead on arrival due to severe traumatic brain injury secondary to bullet wound.

Police ruled out foul play in the incident and called it a tragic accident.

BCPO chief Police Col. Francsco Bulwayan Jr. condoled with the family of the lawman.

Bulwayan emphasized the importance of following safety principles when dealing with issued firearms to prevent such incidents.

He said accidents involving the handling of firearms are unavoidable.
