House Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep David "Jay-jay" Suarez says Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte's plea for President Marcos to resign is both uncalled for and disrespectful.

"I think it's totally uncalled for," Suarez told House of Representatives reporters during a press briefing Monday afternoon, Jan. 29.

"The past two years I've seen the performance of President Bongbong Marcos. We have seen how he has managed the economy coming from the pandemic, we have seen how the country has risen from times that we don't know kung ano ba ang bukas para sa atin (what tomorrow will bring us)," he said.

"We have seen how he has steered reforms in the agriculture sector, in the infrastructure sector, in our economy, in the delivery of social services, and we have seen his commitment to the Filipino people," noted Suarez.

"So yung mga nabanggit sa (So those that we heard from) Davao calling for his resignation is totally disrespectful of the man given the position that he owns," he said.

"[It] has no basis whatsoever, yung sinasabi na wala siyang kumpas...na wala siyang pag-ibig, tamad, walang basis yun (the claims that he has no leadership...that he has no love, that he is lazy, those have no basis)," stressed the administration lawmaker.

During prayer rally in Davao Ciry Sunday, Jan. 28, Mayor Duterte asked President Marcos to simply step down if he does not have love and aspirations for the Philippines.

The local chief executive's remarks came amid a People's Initiative (PI) movement for Charter change (Cha-cha) that has been linked to Marcos allies, particularly from the House of Representatives.

The next person in line for Malacañang in case President Marcos resigns is Vice President Sara Duterte, Mayor Duterte's own sister.

"Like what I said, it's baseless and uncalled for," Suarez further remarked.

President Marcos has said that he favors amending the 1987 Constitution, if only to lift its supposedly restrictive economic provisions.
