AnaKalusugan Party-list Rep. Ray Reyes underscored on Monday, Jan. 29, the importance of early consultations to detect symptoms of goiter and other thyroid diseases.
"Early symptoms of goiter and thyroid diseases are often overlooked. At karamihan sa ating mga kababayan ay nagpapatingin lang sa mga doktor kung malala na ang kanilang kalagayan," said Reyes.
(And the majority of our countrymen only go see doctors if their condition is already severe.)
"When it comes to diseases like goiter, early detection is key. Kaya naman patuloy namin isinusulong sa AnaKalusugan ang pagkakaroon ng libreng checkup para sa lahat ng mga Pilipino," he added.
(That's why we at AnaKalusugan continue to promote the availability of free checkups for all Filipinos.)
Reyes, vice chairman of the Committee on Health, is referring to his House Bill (HB) No. 430, which seeks to provide free annual medical checkups for Filipinos.
The measure aims to establish a program that will grant citizens free annual check-ups including, but not limited to, blood sugar and cholesterol tests.
“Through free checkups and laboratory tests we will reduce hospitalization and improve the health of Filipinos,” Reyes said.
Apart from regular checkups, the congressman also urged the public to incorporate iodine rich foods in daily meals and to always eat meals in moderation.
Foods rich in iodine include eggs, dairy, seaweeds, shrimps, codfish, and salmon, among others.
"Pinggang Pinoy recommends that we eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and lessen the intake of salty, fried, fatty, and sugar-rich foods to prevent chronic diseases," he added.
The lawmaker’s appeal comes as the country observes Goiter Awareness Week, which is held every 4th week of January of every year by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 1188.
Goiter is a health condition where the thyroid gland undergoes abnormal enlargement. This can lead to the appearance of a mass or swelling in the neck.

The signs and symptoms of goiter vary, this may include tiredness, decrease or increase in weight, low or increased appetite, depression, dryness of skin and hair, sleepiness, diarrhea or constipation, and menstrual irregularities for women.
