The church will now be officially recognized as the "National Shrine of the Black Nazarene," in addition to its other titles - Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene, as well as its original canonical name, Saint John the Baptist Parish.

Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula presided over the mass.

Together with Fr. Rufino "Jun" Sescon, Advincula received the official decree of establishment from Bishop Pablo David, declaring the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) approved the petition to elevate the church as the 29th national shrine of the Philippines in its 126th Plenary Assembly in Aklan last July 2023.
