Magnitude-5.1 quake hits Surigao del Sur


BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.1 earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur province on Monday afternoon, January 29.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was recorded at 3:37 p.m. and its epicenter was 133 kilometers (kms) northeast of Hinatuan town, Surigao del Sur.

AN earthquake rocked Surigao del Sur on Monday afternoon and its epicenter was east of the town of Hinatuan.  

It was caused by the Philippine Trench.

The earthquake had a depth of 29 kms, Phivolcs said, adding that this was an aftershock of the December 2 magnitude-7.4 offshore Surigao del Sur tremor.

No damage or injuries are anticipated from this earthquake, Phivolcs said.

The Surigao del Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported no damage or injury from the earthquake.
