The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution expressing its "strong and unqualified support” for President Marcos for his “leadership and sincere commitment to steer the country toward a Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines)”.
Through voice vote, the lower chamber adopted House Resolution (HR) No. 1557 during plenary session on Monday afternoon, Jan. 29.
Members of the House sought to express full support for President Marcos to “rekindle the hopes of the Filipino people for genuine development and better tomorrow”.
The HR No. 1557 specifically cited the “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative as a strong testament to the president’s leadership.
“The Bagong Pilipinas is a strong testament to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s commitment to undertake reform to restore public trust and embark on a transformative journey where government services and financial assistance programs are accessible to every Filipino regardless of creed or religion,” the resolution read.
On Sunday, Jan.28 Marcos presided over the “Bagong Pilipinas” kick-off rally at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. The event, which launched the administration’s new governance brand, was attended by an estimated 400,000 supporters.
During his speech, the President underscored the importance of the Philippine Development Plan of 2023 to 2028, which enumerates “the sectors to which funds should be channeled, and what policies must be implemented so that these can contribute to the overall growth”.
This program was said to be a “call to unity” and a “rallying cry” which prompted members of the House of Representatives to adopt a resolution to exhibit full support.
On the same day, at Davao City—stronghold of the Duterte family—supporters and government officials displayed a similar show of force through a prayer rally to denounce the ongoing efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution.
During the event, former president Rodrigo Duterte accused President Marcos of using illegal drugs. He even said Marcos was included in a drug watchlist—this was later disproven by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
In a press conference prior to the plenary session Monday, Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd Rep. David Suarez clarified that HR No. 1557 was not a result of Duterte’s tirade against Marcos.
“The manifesto of support is a reiteration of the position we have already stated last year,” said Suarez.
“And after the launch of Bagong Pilipinas, kung saan mahigit sa isangdaang kongresista ang dumalo, naniwala po kami sa nilalayon ng Bagong Pilipinas, mga adhikain, at pagbabago na gustong ipatupad ng ating pangulo (where more than one hundred congressmen attended, we believe in the purpose of the New Philippines, the aspirations, and changes that our president wants to implement),” the lawmaker said.
“Wala po ‘tong kinalaman sa mga nangyari sa rally sa Davao,” he added.
(It has nothing to do with what happened at the rally in Davao.)
The resolution is introduced by high-ranking officials of the House, which include Speaker Martin Romualdez, Senior Deputy Speaker Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales Jr., Deputy Speaker Rep. David Suarez, Majority Leader Rep. Mannix Dalipe, among others.
