After much hype and excitement, the 5-door Suzuki Jimny compact 4x4 was finally revealed last January 25, 2024 at The Cove in Okada Manila. A brief dance routine by street dance group Legit Status served to hype up the crowd before the unveiling. To the tune of The Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started,” a Sizzling Red Metallic two-tone Jimny rolled onto center stage, joining five of its brethren, each displaying the new Jimny’s color palette.

More doors, more fun

The new Jimny 5-door maintains the beloved features of its predecessor while introducing enhancements. Its extended wheelbase and two extra doors, the most notable change from the 3-door model, offers more interior space without compromising the vehicle's iconic design. The hallmark square body remains, ensuring durability and contributing to good viewing angles for better situational awareness. Suzuki points out that rearward vision from the new C and D pillars remains good despite the increased length.

The sleek black interior remains, with Suzuki claiming that the simplicity of the interior minimizes distractions. This design choice allows drivers to focus more on the driving experience, especially in rough or mountainous terrains. The instrument panel and center console panels have been designed to assist drivers in gauging the vehicle's angle, a vital feature for off-road navigation.

A few upgrades

An upgrade in the new model is the rear seating arrangement. With thicker seat cushions, the 5-door Jimny comfortably accommodates two adults, a significant improvement over the 3-door version. Enhanced lighting and conveniently located power window switches add to the passenger comfort. The extended wheelbase has resulted in an increased luggage capacity of 211 liters with the 2nd row raised, a substantial upgrade from the 3-door model, making the 5-door Jimny more suitable for longer trips and more significant luggage needs.

Safety in the 5-door Jimny is paramount, with the GLX AT variants featuring front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as reverse parking sensors. Unlike the 3-door version, where a reverse camera is only available on the GLX trim, the 5-door variant makes this feature available even on the base model GL MT.

Under the hood, the 5-door Jimny is powered by the same robust K15B 1.5-liter engine found in the 3-door model, optimized for off-road adventures. It still pushes out 102-Ps and 130-Nm of torque. Despite its longer wheelbase, the vehicle retains crucial off-roading features like AllGrip Pro, a sturdy ladder frame, and exceptional approach, breakover, and departure angles. The suspension system, 3-link rigid axle with coil spring, and part-time 4WD with low-range transfer gear, all contribute to the Jimny's off-road capabilities. Spring rates and gear ratios remain the same as in the 3-door variant.

As for pricing, the GL MT variant comes in at ₱1,558,000, the GLX AT at ₱1,698,000, and the GLX AT Two-Tone at ₱1,708,000. When compared to the 3-door variant, the roughly ₱400,000 increase in price for the GLX AT Two-Tone variants reflects the additional length and space enhancements in the 5-door model.

Appealing to more

The additional doors and enhanced space make the Jimny more appealing to a broader range of consumers, including families and those requiring more space for cargo. The vehicle's ability to serve both as a daily driver and an off-road adventurer makes it a versatile choice in the compact SUV segment.

Suzuki Philippines President, Koichiro Hirao, shared his enthusiasm during the unveiling, noting the Jimny as a symbol of adventure and innovation in the country. He emphasized the vehicle's rich heritage and its appeal to Filipino consumers. Norihide Takei, Director and General Manager for Automobile Division at Suzuki Philippines, also highlighted the Jimny's reputation as a compact, authentic off-road vehicle, adept at handling diverse terrains.

At the event, a number of off-road tuners such as Rugged Rigs (organizers of the popular Jimny Fest) and Overland Kings were also present. As the Jimny has proven itself to be very capable in the rough, the off-road enthusiasts opined that the new 5-door could be great for those seeking the Jimny off-road life, but need more space than what is available on the 3-door version. The new model, with its added practicality and proven off-road capabilities, is especially suited for activities like overlanding. Its extended luggage capacity and comfortable seating for longer journeys make it an ideal choice for adventure seekers. The Jimny's compact size and off-road features mean it can tackle terrains that larger vehicles might struggle with, making it a smart choice for off-road enthusiasts. The longer wheelbase and increased mass may also help to manage the rigid-axle suspension’s characteristics and improve the Jimny’s on-road behavior.

The Suzuki Jimny 5-door variant is, of course, a welcome addition to the Philippine automotive market. It retains the charm and capability of the 3-door model while offering enhanced space and comfort. This combination of features uniquely positions the Jimny 5-door in its segment, appealing to consumers looking for a vehicle with iconic looks and a rich history, meanwhile  balancing everyday utility with an adventurous spirit.
